History of Fashion
Fashion is nothing new; it has been around for thousands of years. As early as 3500 BC, people wore ornamental beads, buttons, and feathers. Beads have also been found from the same time period. The earliest evidence that humans made clothing comes from 40,000-year-old fossils found in Europe. Even though it has been around for a while, fashion really started to blow up not long ago. In the 1820s when high society ladies wore crinolines to dinners and balls. Crinoline is a stiff fabric worn under women’s skirts to make the skirt look bigger. At the time, men wore top hats and long tails. Around the same time period, Roman men wore padded undergarments called “tunics” made of wool. The tunic was a T-shirt worn over their normal clothing.
In the 1660s, women started to wear a new fashion called corsets to make their waists thinner and their bodies look more feminine. In 1774, pantaloons were developed as knee-length trousers for women, which were also popular in Europe during the 18th century.
During the Victorian era in England, people would wear hats with lace on top of them making them more attractive and attractive to ladies. In 1851 men all wore beards to show off their manliness and make them look more masculine.
During the early 20th century women would wear things that were short and tight like dresses with a belt around their waist. They would also wear skirts made of flannel to show off their curves when they were walking. They also wore dresses decorated with lace, frills, ruffles, feathers, and petticoats
In the 1920s, women wore blouses called “dusters” because they were so loose; it was a style that suited any occasion. After WW2, Parisian women went back to dresses because of the alternative to men’s fashion; however, they wanted a more modern look. The stylist Jean Patou created “the little black dress” and launched the trend of dressing up in elegant evening wear. In the 1950s, garments were becoming shorter and shorter until they took on a form that was different from their predecessors; this was due to an influence from American designers such as Edward Worth who designed his clothes with an emphasis on function like military uniforms rather than appearance.
In short, fashion is about trends and styles that change over time in order to meet certain needs or desires.
The most discussed topic about fashion is the relationship between outfits and social class. Fashion also relates to what you can wear, and what dress code is held in a certain city. For example, if you visit Paris, you’ll see that everyone wears black glasses or hats; this is a tradition that represents mourning. In addition, there are clothes that are part of fashion and sometimes they may be called “fashion” but they’re more like accessories such as sunglasses or scarves. Today it seems like we’re constantly wearing cell phones and earphones made of plastic; however, these types of clothes are very similar to medieval clothes which were made from animal hides.
