What is Fashion Designing?

Fashion designing is when an individual or group creates clothing, accessories, footwear, or other lifestyle items for everyday use in diverse styles appropriate to social situations and tastes within a culture. Fashion designers are typically professionally trained in design theory, illustration, construction methods, and manufacturing processes for garments such as clothing (buildings). Fashion designers work in a variety of ways in designing wear, ranging from textile printing: to sketching, to making a wooden form using fabric and then draping the cloth over the wooden form. They might sketch out a garment on paper: they might use computer-aided design (CAD) software to draw out the garment and print it onto paper or another material as a template. The garment is then cut out and assembled by hand.

The design can also be tested for ergonomics (“How does it fit?”/”Is it comfortable enough for people to wear?”/”Does the wearer need any special clothing to go with this?”, etc.). Fashion designers may choose to work with fabric or synthetic materials from which garments are made. Fashion designers work with non-textile materials such as leather, rubber, plastic, fabric, and metal in order to create a garment. Combining different materials produces different materials that are suited for particular uses, such as leather and suede or metal and rubber.

There is much scope for creativity in this field. Fashion designers may source unusual items of clothing so that their clothes match and blend in with the style of the fashion designer. The garments may be created for use on a catwalk or things like that where they can be photographed and then displayed on a website or in a magazine.

During the design process, they have to decide which types of clothing are popular at the time and what will work best within their budget. They will also have to think about who is likely to wear their clothing. They must take into account people’s opinions on what is fashionable and accessible in order to make a profit (unless they are just designing for fun or charity). Fashion designers may use tools like inspiration boards and mood boards, where they pin up photos of things that inspire them, such as color combinations or materials used in other pieces of clothing. These help them when they’re trying to come up with ideas for new designs.
